OCD Information and Sponsorship
Achieving Wellness from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a treatment study sponsored by NIMH.
Who Is Eligible to Participate in the Study?
Are you taking one of the following medications for obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Are you still having symptoms that bother you?
Are you interested in receiving no-cost psychotherapy that can improve your OCD symptoms?
Are you interested in learning if you still need medication after significant improvement with Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) therapy?
If you answered "yes" to these questions, you may be eligible for treatment as part of an OCD research program at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University/The New York State Psychiatric Institute.
No cost treatment is being offered for people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) who are still experiencing distressing symptoms despite taking SRI medication for their OCD.
Eligible participants will receive up to 25 sessions of Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (EX/RP) while continuing to take their OCD medication. Therapy will last up to 12 weeks and sessions will occur twice weekly.
If participants’ symptoms reduce substantially after receiving EX/RP, they will be randomly selected to have their medication gradually replaced with placebo (meaning sugar pill) or to continue their medication. Participants will not know whether they are taking SRI or placebo. Participants will continue to be monitored by the study psychiatrist during this 6-month follow-up period, and will have periodic visits with their therapist to help maintain the gains they made during treatment.
Men and women ages 18-75 with OCD who are currently taking one of the above-listed medications for their OCD may be eligible to participate in the study. To be eligible for the study, you must be willing to participate in EX/RP therapy and take active or inactive (placebo) pills under the direction of the study doctor without knowing if you are staying on your current medication. This will be done only if you experience significant improvement after EX/RP therapy.
There is no cost for the EX/RP therapy. The medication or placebo pills given to participants who get well after EXRP will also be free of cost. Participants will be responsible for the cost of their medication while receiving the EX/RP therapy.
All study visits will take place at either the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia or the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University in New York.
